Ķegums (German Keggum ) is a Latvian city on the Daugava River , 45 kilometers southeast of Riga. In 2016, Ķegums had 2357 inhabitants.
history
The place emerged from 1936 with the construction of the hydropower plant . The namesake Gut Ķegums (dt. Rautenfeld ), as well as the dangerous local rapids sank in the floods of the Daugava. A total of around 13 km² of ground area was flooded by the power plant's reservoir . The construction work was completed by a Swedish company by 1940. In 1944 the dam was blown up when the German Wehrmacht withdrew, but it was rebuilt and raised by 1947.
The place received city rights in 1991.
Sports
In Ķegums there is the “zelta zirgs” (German “golden horse”) motorcycle racing track, where national and international races take place. Ķegums has often hosted the Latvian Sidecar Motocross World Championship and the Latvian Motocross Grand Prix.
Ķeguma novads
In 2002 the city merged with two rural parishes into one administrative district. In 2009 another congregation was added. In 2010, 6306 inhabitants were registered.
