The Ōsumi Peninsula ( Japanese 大 隅 半島 , Ōsumi-hantō ) is a peninsula on the southern tip of Kyūshū in Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan .
It lies east of Kagoshima and separates the Pacific Ocean in the east from Kagoshima Bay in the west, on the opposite side of which is the Satsuma Peninsula . The peninsula has an area of 2541 km², the width 10-20 km and the length 70 km.
The towns and cities on the peninsula include Tarumizu , Soo , Shibushi, and Kanoya .
Since the eruption of the Sakurajima volcano in 1914, it has been connected to the Ōsumi Peninsula.
