Žiga Hirschler

Žiga Hirschler (last name also Slavic Hiršler ; pseudonym: Hirski ; born March 21, 1894 in Velika Trnovitica near Bjelovar , Austria-Hungary , today Croatia ; † 1941 in Jasenovac concentration camp , Independent State of Croatia ) was a Yugoslav composer and music critic.

Life

Hirschler completed his studies in 1917 with Vjekoslav Rosenberg-Ružić at the Zagreb Music Academy . He then worked as a music critic for various daily newspapers (including Jutarnji List , Večer , Hrvatski list ). Later he was also editor-in-chief of the magazine Muzičar (The Musician). He composed orchestral works, chamber music, piano music and songs as well as five successful operettas and three operas since the mid-1920s , including the opera diptych Dvije renesansne noći ( Two Renaissance Nights ), of which only the first part, Fiorentinska noć , was performed .

At the time of the establishment of the fascist Independent State of Croatia in 1941, Hirschler was working in the propaganda department of the Croatian Authors' Association in Zagreb, but he lost this job due to his Jewish roots. He wrote his last letters in September 1941, was arrested and taken to the Jasenovac concentration camp. Numerous well-known musicians from Zagreb and other personalities tried to obtain his release from the camp, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Hirschler died in the camp, probably in November 1941.
