Ștefan Golescu (* 1809 in Câmpulung Muscel ; † August 27, 1874 in Nancy ) was a Romanian statesman and brother of Nicolae Golescu .

Life

Ștefan Golescu was born in Câmpulung Muscel around 1809, the son of the scholar Dinicu Golescu and his wife Zoe Farfarain. He had four siblings. He was later educated in Geneva , initially entered the military and later held several higher civil administration posts.

He took part in the revolution of 1848 and went to France as an exile . On his return home, he became a member of the Dīwāns ad hoc and later held the office of President of the Control Commission for Finance and Economic Policy, from which he, however, resigned in 1861.

After Prince Karl ascended to the throne , he became Foreign Minister under the Constantin A. Kretzulescu government in March 1867 . From August 1867 to November 1867 he was Prime Minister and Interior Minister of Romania at the same time, then Prime Minister until May 1869. After the change of government, his brother Nicolae Golescu became Prime Minister of Romania. He had the same political direction as Nicolae Golescu, only more sharply defined.
