Nicolae Golescu (* 1810 in Câmpulung ; † 1878 ) was a Romanian statesman.

Nicolae Golescu, born into a Wallachian boyar family , a brother of Ștefan Golescu , received his education in Geneva . In 1829 Wallachia returned, he joined the local military and became a colonel and adjutant of Gospodars Alexandru Ghica transported.

He later went into community service and held various high offices. After the outbreak of the Wallachian Revolution of 1848 he played a prominent role and for a few months he was in charge of all affairs of the principality. After an officer conspiracy first attempted to arrest him and other revolutionaries, he was freed by a crowd led by Ana Ipătescu , who may also be his mistress.

Arrested after the Russian-Turkish occupation of the country, he escaped and moved to Paris. His exile was not ended until the Peace of Paris in 1856 . When he returned to Wallachia in July 1857, he was elected by the city of Bucharest with a large majority to the Dīwān , who decided to unite the two Danube principalities on October 21, made Vice-President of this assembly and later Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet appointed, which came to head the business after the double election of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza (Prince Alexandru Ioan I) .

In 1860 he became Minister of War, but resigned in 1861 because he did not agree with the Prince's policies and joined the most determined opposition. In 1866 he led the conspiracy that overthrew Cuza (February 23) and became the head of the Provisional Government.

On May 12, 1868, under Prince Karl von Hohenzollern (Carol I), he was appointed Foreign Minister and Prime Minister and charged with suppressing the Israelite riots; released in November, he was elected President of the Senate. Golésco belonged to the extremely national party, which strove to break free from Turkey and unite all Romanians into one state. Dissatisfied with Prince Karl, he tried on August 20, 1870 in Ploieşti, along with other boyars, to proclaim the republic, was arrested, but acquitted by the jury on October 29.
