Īao Valley
The Īao Valley (English also Iao Valley ) on the island of Maui ( Hawaii ) can be reached in a westerly direction, about five kilometers from Wailuku . The valley is framed by the steep slopes of the West Maui Montains . In 1790 , King Kamehameha I fought the decisive battle for Maui here and defeated King Kahekili .
At the end of the road, overgrown by lush jungle , the volcanic monolith ʻĪao Needle ( Hawaiian : kūkaemoku ) rises about 365 m above the valley.
Short walks lead along the stream and to some lookout points. The park was closed from September 2016 to August 2017 due to flood damage.
