ʻAkilisi Pohiva

Samiuela ʻAkilisi Pōhiva (born April 7, 1941 - September 12, 2019 ) was a Tongan politician and Prime Minister of his country from 2014 until his death .

Life

Pohiva studied education at the University of the South Pacific and worked as a teacher in Tonga. Since 1987 Pohiva has been a member of the Fale Alea . From 1996 he was arrested several times for his political actions. From January 4, 2011 to January 13, 2011, Pohiva was briefly Minister of Health of Tonga, resigning in protest against the appointment of two ministerial posts that were not appointed from among the elected members of parliament.

Since December 30, 2014, Pohiva has been Prime Minister of Tonga, the first Prime Minister from among the people.

Pohiva was a member of the political party Human Rights and Democracy Movement in Tonga. Since 2010 he has been a member of the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands (Paati Temokalati 'ae' Otu Motu 'Anga'ofa). He was married to Neomai Pohiva.
