Frederick Vakaʻuta Sevele (born July 7, 1944 in Nuku'alofa ) is a Tongan politician. He was the Prime Minister of Tonga from 2006 to 2010 .

His training began when he attended Apifoʻou College in Tonga. He then went to St John's College in Levuka on Ovalau Island in the Fiji Islands and later to the Marist Brothers High School in Suva . He then attended St Bede's College in Christchurch , New Zealand , before moving to the University of Canterbury .

He was elected to the Fale Alea in 1999 as one of nine people's representatives and was re-elected in 2002 and 2005. He was appointed Minister of Trade, Labor and Industry. In this role, through clever negotiations, he enabled Tonga to join the World Trade Organization in December 2005. In early 2006, in response to the public service strike in 2005, he submitted an Employment Relations Bill to the Cabinet based on the eponymous Fijian bill.

After the surprising resignation of Prince ʻAhoʻeitu ʻUnuakiʻotonga Tukuʻaho on February 11, 2006, he became Prime Minister. This came six months after a series of pro-democratic protests calling for the royal family to play a lesser role in politics . Sevele's position as Prime Minister was validated by King Taufaʻahau Tupou IV when His Majesty Dr. Sevele was appointed Tonga's first civil prime minister. Sevele was the first head of government in the country who was not noble. In the 2010 elections, he no longer ran. After the end of his tenure, he was raised to the nobility by King George Tupou V.
