Schwiesau Hospital

The Schwiesau Hospital was a hospital in the Neue Neustadt district of Magdeburg .

history

The founding of the hospital was carried out by a foundation of the landowner Berthold Schwiesau in 1471 . Schwiesau, who remained without an inheritance together with his wife Magerte, applied to the Archbishop of Magdeburg, Johann von Bayern, for permission to establish a hospital, which was granted in an archbishop's document of May 24, 1471. The certificate begins with the words:

"We Johannes by God's grace, Archbishop of Magdeburg, Primate in Germania, Count Palatine of the Rhine and Duke of Bavaria, openly confess with this letter for us and our descendants; That the cautious Berthold Swiezolo, our citizen in our new town Magdeburg and dearly loyal to us fearing how he gave his house and farm to a hospital for pilgrims and poor, frail people who have no inn or apartment to accommodate and keep and nobody around, to praise our Lord and his soul for consolation, salvation and bliss To take money or good for the sake of it, but only to receive needy people in it. "

The foundation existed for over 450 years. Both during the Schmalkaldic War and the Thirty Years' War , their buildings were destroyed and rebuilt. When, in 1812, on the orders of Napoleon I, large parts of Magdeburg Neustadt were demolished in order to create a sufficient field of fire for the French- occupied Magdeburg Fortress , the Schwiesau Hospital was also destroyed. The reconstruction took place from 1816 in the Mittagstrasse in the New Neustadt.

Initially operated as a retirement home for poor elderly people, the increasingly wealthy foundation founded a school for the poor in 1843 . In 1851 the foundation also established a hospital . In later years, however, the foundation again concentrated solely on running the hospital.

However , the foundation's assets were completely destroyed by the inflation in the early 1920s. Schwiesaustraße in Magdeburg still reminds of Berthold Schwiesau and the foundation he founded.
