Tupou VI. (* July 12, 1959 in the Royal Palace in Nukuʻalofa as ʻAhoʻeitu ʻUnuakiʻotonga Tukuʻaho ) has been King and 24th Tu'i Kanokupolu of Tonga since March 18, 2012 .

Life

He is the younger brother of his late predecessor, George Tupou V. His father was King Taufaʻahau Tupou IV.

In 1982 he joined the Tongan Navy and became a corvette captain in 1987 . From 1990 to 1995 he held the supreme command of the PPB Voea Pangai , which at that time was used for peacekeeping in Bougainville . In 1998 he ended his military career and took over from his resigned brother Tupouto'a (later George Tupou V) the office of Foreign and Defense Minister, which he held until August / September 2004.

From January 3, 2000 to February 11, 2006 he was Prime Minister of Tonga . Then he was named Crown Prince of the South Pacific island nation. He became King of Tonga in 2012 after the death of his brother. The official coronation took place on July 4, 2015.

Tupou VI. is married to Queen Nanasipau'u and has three children, the eldest son, Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala, being Crown Prince .
