The Tonga Defense Services (TDS) are the armed forces of the Kingdom of Tonga in the South Pacific . They report to the Tongan Ministry of Defense . The armed forces have a strength of about 450 men.
The primary task of the TDS is to "defend the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Tonga". Other tasks include:
- Supporting authorities to ensure internal peace
- Completion of tasks that the King delegates to TDS from time to time
The TDS is partially supported by security agreements with Australia , China , India , Great Britain , New Zealand and the USA . The armed forces have participated in the coalition of the willing ( Iraq ), in international ISAF operations in Afghanistan and in the mission to the Solomon Islands .

The TDS is divided into eight areas that are subordinate to a central command:
