The Naval War College ( NWC ; German Seekriegsakademie ) is an educational and research facility of the US Navy . Her core tasks include the development of concepts and strategies for maritime warfare as well as the training and education of officers in the US Navy.

The motto of the institution is viribus mari victoria (German: “Victory through sea power”).

General

The college was founded on October 6, 1884. Its first president, Commodore Stephen B. Luce , was initially given the former building of the Newport poor sanctuary in Newport , Rhode Island . One of the first four faculty members was Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan . He is known to have placed particular emphasis on strategic thinking ; he is credited with having great influence on naval warfare worldwide. Despite Mahan's later reputation, the NWC's didactic approach was viewed with great skepticism for a long time, as it was not customary to move large parts of the training away from the ships.

The NWC has been dealing with war and combat scenarios since 1887 and over time has become a "laboratory" for the development of naval warfare concepts and strategies. Almost all of the US maritime operations of the 20th century were originally planned, simulated, or developed by NWC .

The basic courses of study include subjects such as "Strategy and Politics", "National Security and Decision-Making" and "Mixed Military Operations". Students from all US armed forces as well as from abroad can attend the Naval War College of the United States and a. acquire a Master of Arts .

The college also hosts a variety of symposia and conferences. There are plenty of own publications out there; since 1948 the quarterly journal Naval War College Review has appeared .

The Naval War College was granted National Historic Landmark status in January 1964 . It has been listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places since October 1966 .
