- (i) ana , added as an ending to a proper name, is the historical name of a collection of sayings, pieces of music, jokes, judgments, notes or anecdotes that either directly concern the bearer of that name, go back to him as a source or as an homage to related to him. Examples: Gallettiana , Husserliana , Johnsoniana , Taubmanniana , Marquardtiana , Kreisleriana , Bachianas brasileiras . The ending is of Latin origin and the plural neuter for the ending -anum. history

This type of collection appears to have first appeared in France in the 17th century ( Scaligerana , 1666) and was later emulated in Germany , Holland , Denmark , England and North America as well . On the one hand, the publication could be protected from censorship by the great name of a deceased person, but in many cases the naming simply followed a fashion. Although this fashion lost its popularity at the end of the 19th century and fell asleep (apart from re-publications) in the 20th century , “collection of sayings” enjoys unbroken popularity as a crossword puzzle question .
