Friedrich Taubmann (born May 15, 1565 in Wonsees ; † March 24, 1613 in Wittenberg ), also working under the ( Latinized ) name Taubmanus, was an important philologist and a Latin poet crowned by Rudolf II .

Life

After the loss of both parents, the twelve-year-old Taubmann attended the Latin school in Kulmbach as an alumnus from 1578 , where his special talent was recognized and made possible for him to be one of the first scholarship holders to move into the newly founded princely school in the former Cistercian monastery of Heilsbronn in Central Franconia from 1582 . After graduating from high school in 1590, he initially hired himself as a court master with various Franconian noble families . At Easter 1592 he was able to enroll as a scholarship holder at the University of Wittenberg , at that time one of the largest and most respected universities in Europe. In the same year he published his first volume of poetry Martinalia & Bacchanalia , which earned him the coronation Poeta laureatus in 1593 . Its gold-wrought laurel wreath has been preserved to this day.

In October 1595 he received his master's degree and was appointed to the Wittenberg chair for poetry, a position he held for the rest of his life. Another collection of poems, Melodaesia , was published in 1597, once again confirming his reputation as a brilliant Latin poet. But it was not until his great Plautus edition from 1605 that he gained international fame. It appeared at least seven editions before 1640, until it was replaced by a new edition by Taubmann's brilliant student and successor in office August Buchner . The famous humanist scholar Caspar von Barth was also his student. During his tenure, Taubmann was elected dean three times, and in 1608 was elected prorector.

Taubmann campaigned for the revival of humanistic studies all his life and fought the grievances of his time with the weapons of rhetoric and ridicule. His sparkling wit made him a close confidante of his Saxon sovereign. The multi-talented, humorous scholar died on March 24, 1613 in his adopted home Wittenberg, where he was buried two days later with great sympathy among the population.

An often launched collection of poems, funny ideas, sayings and collated by him anecdotes from the student life before the Thirty Years' War was only in 1703 under the title Taubman (s) iana published by someone else.
