1-18 Walmer Crescent

An ensemble of residential buildings is located at 1–18 Walmer Crescent in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1966 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

William Hamilton of Middleton leased the land. The planned row of buildings was already recorded in the contracts. The assumption that a mirror-inverted row of buildings was planned opposite can be ruled out on the basis of the lease, as this property belonged to Moses Steven of Bellahouston . The ensemble was built between 1857 and 1862 to a design by the Scottish architect Alexander Thomson .

description

The three-story ensemble is led in a flat arc along Paisley Road ( A8 ) in the southern Glasgow district of Cessnock . As usual for Thomson's work, the facades are designed in the Greek Revival style . It is one of his simplest designs. The masonry on the ground floor is rusticated and banded along the first floor. The low-lying, ornamented framed entrance doors are accessible via short front stairs with cast iron railings. Pilasters flank the windows on the second floor. They carry a pseudo entablature with cornices . The roofs are covered with slate.
