The 1st division 2016/17 was the 70th season of the Danish 1st division in men's handball (the 19th as the second highest division).

Qualification for the Håndboldligaen 2017/18

Qualification for the 1st division 2017/18

The three champions of the groups of the 2nd division ( Frederiksberg IF , Stoholm Håndbold and HEI Håndbold ) went straight to the 1st division in 2017/18.

The three runners-up in the 2nd division played out two teams in a simple round, which determined two participants in the 1st division 2017/18 in direct duels with the tenth and eleventh placed in the 1st division.
