The 14.5-mm machine gun KPWT ( Russian крупнокалиберный пулемёт Владимирова танковый , krupnokaliberny pulemjot Vladimirova tankowy , mutatis mutandis translated large-caliber machine gun of Vladimirov, Type Panzerwaffe ) is a superheavy Soviet machine gun , which as a board weapon combat and armored vehicles is employed.
development
The KPWT is a variant of the heavy infantry machine gun KPW , which was developed in 1943 and mass-produced from 1949. While it could not convince as an infantry support weapon PKP , the execution for use in combat vehicles was more successful.
construction
The weapon is a closing recoil loader with a rotating head lock , a rigid lock and a short barrel return. Characteristic features of the weapon are the perforated barrel jacket and the funnel-shaped recoil booster at the muzzle, which supports the slide back of the barrel and the loading cycle. The 14.5 mm ammunition is fed with permanent metal belts , the belt can be inserted from the left or right after the belt feeder has been converted. The barrel is interchangeable. In contrast to the KPW or PKP, electrical firing is used. In addition, the gun got a shot counter and a forward-facing case ejector. This enabled installation in combat vehicles and remote operation.
commitment
Initially, the KPWT was used as secondary armament for heavy Soviet post-war tanks, such as the T-10 . Due to its high performance, lightly armored targets can be fought at distances of 800 m to 1500 m and unarmored targets up to a distance of 2000 m. The 14.5 mm ammunition originally developed for the PTRD and PTRS anti- tank rifles can penetrate 32 mm of armor at a distance of 500 m. Since 1965, the KPWT is the main armament of Soviet reconnaissance and armored personnel carriers, as well as armored personnel carriers used. The armament is usually installed in a small tower. Well-known examples are the BRDM-2 , the BTR-60 , the BTR-70 and the BTR-80 . The weapon was exported together with the corresponding vehicles and is therefore now common in many countries around the world.
Overall, the weapon turned out to be successful. Their ballistic performance became a touchstone in the development of NATO combat vehicles. In NATO standard 4569 , protection level 4 for kinetic energy was defined as the condition to be fulfilled against the 14.5 × 114 mm B32 cartridge at 200 meters at a speed of 911 m / s.
