It uses 14.5 × 114 mm ammunition .

The machine gun appeared in a large number of variants and mountings . Originally developed as an anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapon for the Soviet infantry during World War II , it was later used in combat vehicles. Here is a list of the types:

  • PKP : ( Pechotnyj Krupnokalibernyj Pulemjot ), machine gun with wheel mount for the infantry
  • KPW : Use in anti-aircraft weapons in the ZPU series, either as a single ( ZPU-1 ), double ( ZPU-2 ), or quadruple machine gun ( ZPU-4 ) (the illustration shows a ZPU-1 )
  • KPWT : ( T for tankowyj ), primary turret weapon in armored personnel carriers such as the BRDM-2 or models of the BTR series (from BTR-50 to BTR-80 )

The KPW was part of the standard equipment of the Soviet armed forces until the end of the 1980s. The model is still often used, especially in Arab armies.
