The 160 was a German passenger aircraft developed in the 1950s with turbine air jet engines . It was the only long-range aircraft construction project in the German Democratic Republic . The project developed by VEB Flugzeugwerke Dresden (FWD) was canceled early.

history

In addition to the license production of the Il-14 and the development of the 152 , the aircraft factory in the Dresden district of Klotzsche began to develop successor models at an early stage. The need for a long-haul aircraft was derived from the analysis of international air traffic. Also in view of the existence of the Tu-104 , a parallel development was considered worthwhile, as it was known that this aircraft emerged from a military model and was therefore probably burdened with compromises. The 160 was the largest and most demanding of the projects listed in the Aviation Industry Plan of July 12, 1955. It was canceled at an early stage. A detailed construction was no longer carried out.

construction

The 160 was planned as a four-engine cantilever low-wing aircraft with retractable three-legged landing gear with nose wheel. The main landing gear was to have four wheels each. A pressurized cabin was provided for the aircraft . The engine arrangement was unusual: two engines each were to be attached to the underside of the fuselage in front of and behind the wings. This would have resulted in considerable noise pollution. The wings were swept, the sweep of the interior was stronger than the outer wings. The engines were supposed to have a static thrust of 49–59 kN each; a specific engine type had not yet been determined.
