Maximilian Schels (born May 25, 1889 in Munich , † 1935 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a German painter and graphic artist . He lived in Berlin and Oberstdorf .

As a soldier, Schels was involved in the Battle of Verdun in World War I , after which he returned to Munich for a short time. From 1918 to 1927 he lived in Oberstdorf, then in Salzburg and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. He was fascinated by the world of the Alps, which became the inspiration and model for his artistic work.

Searching for his motifs in the wintry and alpine landscape, he presented himself as a master of plein-air painting . His pictures of winter sports events and other folklore depictions always show him at the limits of expressionism .
