1 Wall Street (formerly the Irving Trust Company Building ) is an Art Deco skyscraper in Lower Manhattan , New York City . It replaced the previous Manhattan Life Building .
In 2001 the building was listed by Landmarks Preservation Commission .
history
The building was designed by the architect Ralp Walker and the construction lasted from 1929 to 1931. With 50 floors and a height of 199 meters, it was one of the tallest buildings in the city at the time of its construction. In the years 1963 to 1965, the building at the southern end was increased by 35 floors; before that, the body of the Manhattan Life Building was still there, but without a dome.
The building has a steel frame and the facade consists mainly of limestone, which caused problems in the following years. In 2001 a master plan for the rehabilitation of the problem areas was decided.
Today the building is the headquarters of The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation (BNY Mellon).
