The title of tallest skyscraper in the world was held by the Manhattan Life Insurance Building until 1899, before it was surpassed by the Park Row Building in 1899 .

From 1963 to 1965 the skyscraper had to make way for an annex to the Irving Trust Bank Headquarters Building and was demolished.
