The New York World Building was a skyscraper in New York City and the seat of the New York World newspaper . It was completed in 1890 and demolished in 1955.

history

construction

Construction of the building began on October 10, 1889 and was completed a year later, on December 10, 1890. It is the new building of the old headquarters, which burned down in 1882 and was located on the area of today's Potter Building . The architect, like 15 years earlier for the Western Union Telegraph Building , was George B. Post.

structure

With a height of 94 meters, with a top even 106.4 meters, it was the world's tallest building from 1890 to 1894 until it was replaced by the Manhattan Life Insurance Building . It was also the first structure in New York City to tower over the steeple of Trinity Church . The number of floors is controversial. The newspaper said there were 26 floors in use, but recent research only suggests 16 to 18 floors.

The skyscraper was also known as the "Pulitzer Building", named after Joseph Pulitzer , who had his office on the second floor of the dome. This gave the founder of the Pulitzer Prize a view of the rest of the city.

demolition

In 1955, the New York World Building was demolished to make way for a driveway to the Brooklyn Bridge .
