history
The Potter Building is located at the intersection of Park Row and Beekman Street, in the area known as the Civic Center . It was built from 1882 to 1886 and stood in the so-called Newspaper Row , a name at the time for what is now Park Row, where many newspapers and publishers had their office buildings. The Potter Building was designed by Norris G. Starkweather, in the neo-Romanesque style with steel construction, which around this time found its first application in high-rise buildings, such as the then American Tract Society Building and, a little later, the Park Row Building . It is the oldest still preserved skyscraper that was built in this way. The Potter Building had the best fire protection equipment of the time, such as iron girders and cast iron pillars. The thick terracotta facade parts were brought from Long Island .
The Potter Building replaced a building that burned down in 1882, which was for a long time part of the New York World newspaper headquarters . From 1979 to 1981 the Potter Building was converted into a residential building and has been home to coveted apartments ever since.
