history

This part of Manhattan was the heart of newspaper publishers in the 1880s. In the 19th century, the offices of the publishing houses were mainly located around Park Row 38. In the late 19th century, one high-rise after the other was built in this area , which at the time broke records in height. Today, however, the height of these skyscrapers seems rather modest compared to the skyscrapers .

In the meantime, however, these older buildings give the district a historical flair and impress with their imposing architecture. These listed buildings from different eras of Manhattan's history shape the face of the area. Of particular note are the Woolworth Building , City Hall from 1811 and St. Paul's Chapel from the 18th century - the oldest building in New York City that has been used in the same way throughout.

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , many people have moved here again. Around 20,000 people now live in the Civic Center. This is not very much by New York standards, since according to the US Census, around 35,000 people in Manhattan normally live in a similar area . But in the Civic Center a lot of space is needed for offices for public institutions. There are also a number of squares and parks. Nevertheless, various buildings have been converted in the past so that more living space was created and the number of residents increased.
