The 1 er régiment étranger de cavalerie (1st Cavalry Foreign Regiment; also abbreviated 1 ° REC ) is an association of the Foreign Legion equipped with the wheeled armored vehicle AMX-10 RC and since 11 July 2014 as part of the restructuring of the French armed forces in Camp de Carpiagne (Bouches-du-Rhône) stationed. Until the move, the regiment had been based in the Labouche quarter in Orange since 1967 . The regiment is part of the 6th light armored brigade ( 6th BLB - 6e brigade légère blindée ), with its headquarters in Nîmes . The unit has existed since 1921.

The association in Sousse was formed largely from former cavalrymen of the White Army . In the 1920s and 1930s he participated in the suppression of local uprisings in Syria and Morocco . During the Second World War in 1945 he took part in the fighting for Colmar and in southern Germany.

The regiment saw its next missions in the Indochina War (there it had at times a strength of 17 squadrons including amphibious units ) and in the Algerian War . Almost the whole regiment was involved in the Second Gulf War and was used as an armored reconnaissance aircraft in the Daguet operation. It also provided part of the UN troops in Cambodia and in the former Yugoslavia . During the Opération Serval , individual squadrons of the 2013 regiment were alternately deployed in Mali .

The patron saint of the regiment is St. George , in whose honor an open day is held every year around April 23 .

The regiment continues the tradition of the 7 e régiment de cuirassiers (formerly: "Royal-Étranger cavalerie"), which was dissolved in 1962 .
