2,6-Di- tert -butyl-4-nitrophenol is an aromatic compound ; it is a phenol derivative with two tert - butyl groups and one nitro group as substituents. It is a yellow crystalline powder that is relatively soluble in organic solvents but insoluble in water.

Occurrence

It is found, among other things, on board submarines as an impurity, where it can arise from the nitration of an antioxidant ( 2,6-di- tert- butylphenol ) in the turbine oil .

use

According to DIN EN ISO 105-X18 , paper towels soaked with 2,6-di- tert- butyl-4-nitrophenol are brought into contact with a test specimen in order to obtain information on the expected yellowing caused by phenols .
