The Symphony in C sharp minor op. 11 is the second symphony by the composer Nikolai Jakowlewitsch Mjaskowski .
History of origin
In 1911 Mjaskowski graduated from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and now had to prove his skills as a freelance artist. In the spring he first met the conductor Konstantin Saradschew , who immediately recognized the potential of Myaskovsky's music. On June 12, 1911, the symphonic poem “Das Schweigen” was performed for the first time under Sarajev's direction, an orchestral work by Mjaskowski. Inspired by this experience, Myaskovsky worked very productively in the period that followed. The result was a revision of “Das Schweigen”, a Sinfonietta and the second symphony.
analysis
The pieces that Myaskovsky wrote before the First World War (including the first three symphonies and the two symphonic poems) bear, according to the composer's own statement, the “stamp of deep pessimism”. This pessimism, caused by personal fate and the political circumstances of the time, can also be seen in this symphony: restless and tense passages alternate with lyrical melodies, associations with nature turn into images of struggle and death. Nevertheless, the tonal language of the early works is still based on the romantic models. The first movement is in C sharp minor, the second slow movement is in A minor . The actually three-movement work appears in two movements, since the second and third movements merge into one another. This impression is created by the fact that the end of the second movement, initially in A major , anticipates the main theme of the third movement and leads to the third movement via an accelerando . The movement ends in C sharp minor again.
Reception and criticism
The piece was premiered on June 28, 1913, before the premiere of the first symphony , in Pavlovsk under the baton of AP Aslanov. Mjaskowski's friends wrote to him about a concert in April 1915 under the direction of Hugo Warlich , as he was serving at the front at the time. Myaskovsky later said of the play that it was “sugar water with sighs from Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky ”.
