The 20th World Scout Jamboree (World Scout Meeting) took place from December 28, 2002 to January 8, 2003 in Sattahip , Thailand , under the motto “Share our World, share our cultures”. With more than 24,000 participating scouts from 147 countries, it was one of the largest meetings of the World Organization of the Scout Movement since World War II.

program

Common main activities of the tent camp were the opening ceremony, the New Year celebration with a speech by the Thai King Rama IX. Bhumibol Adulyadej and the closing ceremony with handing over the flag to the British delegation as the host of the 21st World Scout Jamboree 2007 .

During the camp, each group of participants could choose from a variety of activities. On the site itself there was the “Crossroads of Cultures”, where one could deal with Thai culture on the one hand and platforms for cultural exchange on the other. The “Global Development Village” offered four workshop areas on the topics of health , environment , peace and rights . In the “City of Science” modern technologies were taught. The respective national delegations also presented themselves in their own area.

Outside the camp, various activities were carried out in the area around the square, some of which benefited the Thai population. In addition to activities in the sea, day hikes through the jungle were also offered.

Storage place

Located on the Gulf of Thailand , the campsite covered more than 1200 hectares and was divided into four villages named after the oceans. Each village consisted of six sub-camps with about 1000 participants in 32 teams . Each troop of around 40 scouts had a plot of 15 m by 25 m available to set up sleeping tents, kitchen tents, material tents and camp gates.

To make the journey easier, a train station peron was specially created at the Jamboreegelände. For the water supply, a water reservoir was dug, which held around 170,000 m³ of water.

particularities

Because of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , the Boy Scouts of America made their participation dependent on adequate protective measures. In addition to warships that secured the coast, Thai military units were stationed in the forests around the camp, which were largely invisible to the participants.
