occupation

July 22 is a six-part Norwegian drama series by Norwegian broadcaster NRK , which first aired in early 2020. The series tells the fictional stories of five people who were mainly professionally involved in the terrorist attacks of July 22, 2011 .

action

The events before, during and after the attacks are chronologically reconstructed from the perspective of five main characters: As a journalist, Anine reports on the terror and researches errors in the police operation. As a police officer, Eivind has to do challenging tasks on site and struggles with his conscience because of alleged omissions. Anne Cathrine welcomes the injured as an anesthesiologist at Ullevål Hospital and fights against cuts in the health system. As a primary school teacher, Helga experiences the grief of the children of relatives up close. Mads is a right-wing blogger who inspired the perpetrator to act.

production

The authors Sara Johnsen and her husband Pål Sletaune wanted to write a series that was as authentic as possible, in which the real events are told through fictional characters in order to counteract twisted representations and future oblivion. NRK means “22. July “as the most complex in-house production to date. It should be experienced as "authentic and respectful".

With costs of 106 million Norwegian crowns (around 10 million euros), the series exceeded the budgeted budget by 36 million crowns. After four of the six episodes were broadcast, around a million people had already seen the series.

Awards

Sara Johnsen received the Nordisk Film & TV Fond award for the best screenplay at the Göteborg International Film Festival in January 2020. In May 2020 she and Pål Sletaune were awarded the Fritt-Ord Honorary Prize for "an outstanding artistic contribution to critical reflection on the dramatic events" .

At the presentation of the Norwegian television award " Gullruten " in June 2020, the series was named the best drama series and also received four specialist prizes, including: a. for the best script and the best direction.
