Fritt-Ord price
The Fritt Ord Prize (Norwegian: Fritt Ords pris ) and the Fritt Ord Honor Prize (Norwegian: Fritt Ords honnør ) are prizes awarded annually by the Norwegian organization Fritt Ord (German: Free Word ) to support freedom of speech . Scholarships are awarded, for example in 2013 to blogger Peder Nøstvold Jensen for a book project.
history
The Fritt Ord Foundation was established in 1974 with the aim of protecting and expanding freedom of expression. She therefore began to support people who are also committed to this goal. In 1976 a Fritt Ord Prize was awarded for the first time.
In 2009 there was a controversial awarding of the Fritt Ord Prize, when the philosopher Nina Karin Monsen was honored. Since Monsen spoke out against same-sex marriages, among other things, the LGBT activist and former award winner Kim Friele returned her award.
Award
The Fritt Ord Prize has been awarded every year since 1976 as part of the May 8 celebrations. This day marks the liberation of Norway from German occupation . The prize can be awarded to people and institutions that, in the eyes of the foundation, make a particularly valuable contribution to the fulfillment of their goals. Under special circumstances, two prizes can be awarded in one year or two people can be awarded one prize. When the award is made, the winner will be given a statue and a sum of money. The winners are determined by the Board of Trustees of the Fritt Ord Foundation.
The honorary award is given for valuable commitment to freedom of expression. Often it is about a more current topic. A monetary amount that varies from year to year is paid out to the winner of the honorary award. He also received a crystal vase as an award.
