Life

Rose grew up with his two siblings in Copenhagen . His father left the family when Rose was a little boy. The family was at times homeless. He studied Russian language and literature at the University of Copenhagen . Rose worked as a translator for Soviet refugees in Denmark. Since the early 1980s, Rose worked as a correspondent in the Soviet Union. From 1990 to 1996 he worked as a Moscow correspondent and from 1996 to 1999 as a Washington correspondent for the Danish daily Berlingske Tidende . In 1999 Rose moved to Jyllands-Posten, for which he initially worked as a Moscow correspondent. From 2004 to 2010, Rose was responsible for the culture department at Jyllands-Posten, and from 2010 for the international department. Rose is married to a Russian woman.

Act

Until the publication of the Mohammed cartoons , Rose's journalistic work was largely determined by his preoccupation with the Soviet Union and Russia.

As head of culture at Jyllands-Posten, Rose commissioned the Mohammed cartoons, which were published in the newspaper on September 30, 2005. Rose wanted to take a stand against a perceived self-censorship in connection with Islam-related issues. The publication of the cartoons sparked a serious political crisis. Rose received numerous death threats as the editor-in-chief. He has been under police protection since then.

Since the so-called "Mohammed Crisis" in Denmark, Rose has been increasingly concerned with issues such as freedom of expression and freedom of the press , self-censorship and Islam . Rose advocates a very extensive freedom of expression based on the US model, combined with criticism of certain restrictions on freedom of expression in many European countries. According to Tøger Seidenfaden , the former editor-in-chief of the Copenhagen daily Politiken , Rose has found the theme of his life here.

Following the "Mohammed Crisis", Rose took a long trip to the USA, where he interviewed Francis Fukuyama , Bill Kristol , Richard Perle and Bernard Lewis , among others . The interviews were u. a. published in the New York Times and Jyllands-Posten. Following the trip, Rose summarized the material in the 2006 book Amerikanske stemmer ("American Voices").

In 2010 Tavshedens Tyranni ("Tyranny of Silence") appeared. The book was widely received in Denmark and attracted attention abroad. Tøger Seidenfaden called the work a “large and committed book about the Mohammed crisis”, but did not spare criticism of certain premises and content. The book was nominated for the prestigious Cavling Prize.
