Per Fugelli (born December 7, 1943 in Stavanger ; died September 13, 2017 in Jæren ) was a Norwegian doctor and professor of general medicine and social medicine . He is considered to be the founder of the concept of planetary health .

Live and act

Fugelli studied medicine and from 1971 to 1973 worked as a general practitioner in Værøy and Røst and from 1977 to 1980 in Porsanger . In 1978 he completed his doctorate ( Ph.D. ) and was appointed professor of general medicine at the University of Bergen in 1984 . In 1992 he accepted the chair for social medicine at the Institute for Health and Society at the University of Oslo and worked there until his retirement in 2013.

His theses on the effects of environmental degradation on human health , published since 1993, led to the concept of planetary health . From a medical point of view, the diagnosis must be made that “patient earth” is ill and that doctors must also participate in the discourse on his treatment from the perspective of medical science: “Global environmental disturbances can have serious consequences for human health. It is time for doctors to make a world diagnosis and give advice on treatment. "

As a social doctor, Fugelli criticized the bureaucratization of the Norwegian health system and stood up for disadvantaged groups and ethnic minorities . He called for methods of health education that recognize people's values, perceptions and potentials for preventing disease and promoting health, instead of education that tries to achieve health-conscious behavior by generating fear and paternalism.

Even after Fugelli contracted colon cancer in 2009 and the cancer was declared fatal in 2012 due to metastasis to the lungs, he continued to work and publish. With his autobiographical writings Death, Shall We Dance? (2010) and Per dies (2017) as well as the film about his dying, he wanted to contribute to the removal of taboos on the topics of dying and death .
