Lorenz Welker

Lorenz Welker (* 1953 in Munich ) is a German musicologist .

Life

From 1972 to 1979 he studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . After obtaining his license to practice medicine, he worked in the Department of Experimental Neuropathology at the Theoretical Institute and at the clinic of the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich. From 1982 to 1989 he was a research associate at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis of the Music Academy of the City of Basel . After receiving his doctorate in 1988 at the University of Zurich as Dr. med. With a thesis in the field of medical history , he completed a second degree in musicology and psychology (at the Universities of Basel and Zurich ) in 1988 with a licentiate . From 1988 to 1990 he headed the microfilm archive at the Musicological Institute of the University of Basel.

After that he was a research assistant at the musicology seminar at Heidelberg University until 1994 . After graduating as Dr. phil. In 1992 at the University of Basel with studies in musical performance practice during the Renaissance and his habilitation in 1993 with an investigation into music on the Upper Rhine in the late Middle Ages , he represented the chair at the University of Bern in the summer semester of 1993 and in the winter semester of 1993/1994 . In the 1994 summer semester he was appointed professor for musicology at the University of Erlangen . Since 1996 he has taught at the University of Munich.

His main research interests are music of the late Middle Ages and the Baroque and questions of musical performance practice.
