Åsne Seierstad (born February 10, 1970 in Oslo ; alternative spelling Aasne Seierstad ) is a Norwegian writer and journalist .

Life

Åsne Guldahl Seierstad was born in Oslo and grew up in Lillehammer with a brother and a sister. She studied Russian , Spanish and the history of ideas in Oslo . She graduated with a Cand.mag. from.

She initially worked for the newspaper Arbeiderbladet . From 1993 to 1996 she reported from Russia as a foreign correspondent and from China in 1997 . From 1998 to 2003 she worked for Dagsrevyen on Norwegian television NRK as a war reporter in conflict regions, including Serbia , Kosovo , Afghanistan , Iraq and Chechnya . Swedish television also broadcast Seierstad's reports.

Her books have been translated into several languages. She has two children with jazz musician Trygve Seim .

Controversy about “The bookseller from Kabul. A family story "

Seierstad wrote about her stay with an Afghan bookseller family. “As a western woman, I was able to stay with both women and men. Had I been a man I would never have been able to live with the family, so close to the Sultan's wives, without them being discussed. ”The book has been translated into many languages.

The bookseller's second wife sued her in a Norwegian court and was awarded Norwegian kroner 250,000 in the first instance in 2010 for incorrectly reproducing some of her quotes and for inappropriately invading her privacy. Among other things, the genitals of a woman visiting the hammam were described in one scene. The bookseller complained that his family had been degraded and that family members whose sex lives Seierstad had described had to emigrate to Pakistan or Canada because of hostility in Afghanistan.
