Lars Roar Langslet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lars Roar Langslet (born March 5, 1936 in Nes , Viken , † January 18, 2016 ) was a Norwegian conservative politician ( Høyre ), historian of ideas and writer.

Life and political career

Langslet obtained a Magister artium (MA) degree in the history of ideas in Norway after completing his military service . From 1957 to 1968 he was editor of the magazine Minerva and in 1960 head of the Det Norske Studentersamfund Association .

In his political career, he was first in 1970 to a member of the Central Committee of the Høyre, MP for Oslo in the Storting 1969-1989 and Chairman of the church and teaching Committee from 1973 to 1980.

From 1981 to 1986 he was Minister for Culture and Science in the Kåre Willoch government . Traditionally, a church department also belonged to this ministry. Since Norwegian law did not allow a Catholic (like Langslet) to be responsible for this matter, this department was outsourced.

One of Langslet's most important goals as Minister of Culture was, after a lively public debate, to end the monopoly of the state (and advertising-free) television and radio broadcaster NRK (Norsk rikskringkasting), which had existed since 1933, and which at the time only operated one radio and one television program. As a result of a change in the law, the first local stations ("nærradioer") that were initially free of advertising were created from 1981/82 onwards, after licenses had been issued . As a result, a considerable variety of privately operated local, regional and national broadcasters has developed from this to the present day.

Later tasks

After his active political days, Langslet was cultural director in Oslo and columnist for the newspaper Aftenposten in 1989/1990 . He was a member of the Norwegian Academy for Language and Literature (Det Norske Akademi for Sprog og Litteratur) and its President ("Preses") from 1995 to 2011. Langslet wrote numerous books, including several biographies, and - in 1991 under the pseudonym Bendik Rosenlund - the detective novel Mord ved statsministerens kontor (Murder in the Prime Minister's Office) .
