The 23 Mile Road Kalamazoo River Bridge is a girder of concrete with curved upper flange in the Marengo Township , Michigan , where the 23 Mile Road on the Kalamazoo River leads. The structure, built in 1922, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1999 .

history

Before today's concrete bridge was erected, there was already an older bridge at this point, which was probably a framework construction made of steel. The new bridge was planned by the Michigan State Highway Department in January 1922, and Calhoun County then built the bridge, which the state later paid for. Mead Brothers from Battle Creek was the construction company commissioned with the demolition of the previous structure and the new building. The construction costs amounted to 10,353  US dollars .

On December 22, 1999, the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places because it is one of the oldest surviving examples of this type of construction and is well preserved. The 12 Mile Road Kalamazoo River Bridge , also in Calhoun County, was added to the National Register on the same day.

design

The bridge is oriented in a north-south direction and is located approximately south of the Marengo settlement in a rural area . The bridge is a continuous girder bridge made of concrete with a curved top flange; this style was developed by the Michigan State Highway Department in the early 1920s. The bridge has a single opening spanned over 18.3 m. In the sides of the girders, which also serve as handrails, are elliptical depressions with six smaller indentations in them. The pillars each having a square cover and a base to which the guard rails of Armco are mounted. Cantilever girders are provided on the abutments below the continuous girder. A sign with the building number is attached to the northwest corner pillar.
