243 Riverside Drive is a 12-story residential building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City , overlooking the Hudson River .

Location, building history and appearance

Cliff Dwelling

Built in 1914 as an apartment hotel, the architect was Herman Lee Meader , the building is on the north side of the flyover of Riverside Drive over 96th Street. Following the irregular plot of the plot, the building has the shape of a wedge, narrow on the north side. Opposite the building is a large playground that lets a lot of air into the building. The city's bus routes are just a few minutes away, as is the subway station on the corner of 96th Street and Broadway . On the 96th Street side, Carter B. Horsley, the fire escapes disrupt the otherwise continuous window lines of the floors.

The lower two floors of the yellow masonry building are framed with limestone friezes , as are the central double windows on the third floor. The end of the building on the roof is a pronounced, serrated protrusion, which is designed as an arch in the middle part of the front facing Riverside Drive and runs round at the ends of the building.

history

From 1965 to 1968, the German writer Uwe Johnson lived in an apartment with his family. The heroine of his first novel, Gesine Cresspahl, also lived in this house in his work. In 1979 the building was converted into condominiums and today contains 43 apartments, which were named Cliff Dwelling because of their elevated position on a rocky promontory and the view over the river . In July 2012, a 2 bedroom apartment was built. B. offered for sale for US $ 1,250,000. However, this could only be sold in 2013 at a discount of 7%. In 2020, a one-room apartment was asking for US $ 575,000.
