The 24 Uurs Zeilrace ( German  24-hour sailing regatta ) is a sailing regatta that takes place every year towards the end of August on the IJsselmeer , the Markermeer , the Dutch Wadden Sea and the North Sea .

Seagoing yachts and multihulls as well as traditional round and flat bottomed ships can take part . More than 700 ships of this type are reported each year. This makes it the largest sailing regatta in the Netherlands in this category and even one of the largest in Europe.

Organization and history

This sailing event is organized by the NVvK, the "Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Kustzeilers". The regatta was first held in 1950 between 22 yachts. Since 2006 the race has been named 'Delta Lloyd 24 Uurs Zeilrace' after the title sponsor.

The aim and course of the regatta

As many nautical miles as possible must be sailed in 24 hours. The start will be in different places in the entire area. All ships that want to finish the regatta properly have to cross the finish line at Medemblik between 23 and 25 hours after the start. The ships sail on courses that are specified by the regulations. These run between different sea marks and may only be used twice.

The right strategy is crucial in this regatta. From the multitude of different courses, the crews have to select those that promise the best results, taking into account the external influences (wind, current, tide) and at the end optimally adhere to the time window to cross the finish line.

Participating ship classes

The participating ships sail in different classes, these are IRC, ORC1 – ORC5 , round and flat bottom ships, multihull boats, VKSJ and the "Tocht" ( German  cruise ). In the "daughter" sail ships that do not belong to one of the aforementioned classes or, for example,. B. do not have a measurement certificate .
