A 3D pin (English 3D-Pen ) is a pen with which drawings and models in the three-dimensional space can customize.

functionality

The functionality is based on that of 3D printers . Unlike normal crayons, 3D pens use plastic , not ink . The plastic filaments have to be filled into the pen and are heated inside the pen so that they come out of the tip in liquid form. The principle can therefore also be compared with a hot glue gun . From there on you can draw in all directions with the pen, as the plastic enables layers up or down. There are also special templates and stencils for better drawing.

history

The first 3D pen, the 3Ddoodler, was developed as a prototype in 2012 by Peter Dilworth, Maxwell Bogue and Daniel Cowen (representatives of their company WobbleWorks, Inc.) . The developers discovered that a 3D printer takes too long to print and is not handy, so they came up with the idea of a 3D pen. On February 19, 2013, the developers decided to further promote the production of the product through Kickstarter.com and started a corresponding campaign. As the pen ran successfully, further models and in January 2015 another version of the pen were produced. This was followed by many other suppliers who also started to manufacture 3D pens.

However, some 3D pens also aim at virtual drawing on a screen or in augmented or virtual reality . Well-known programs for this are for example Tilt Brush and Google Blocks , which work with the help of motion control . An input pen can also be replaced by a game controller . There are also some drawing programs that can be used to draw in 3D with a virtual pen, such as CAD or Paint3D and special computer accessories such as the 3D mouse .
