Nuragic settlement on Monte Sant'Antonio
The nuragic settlement of Monte Sant'Antonio ( Italian Santuario nuragico di monte Sant'Antonio ) is located southeast of Siligo in the province of Sassari in Sardinia .
A nuragic settlement ( Italian: Villaggio nuragico ) is an end- Nuragic , diffuse form of Sardinian cult sites that was probably already broken off in its development phase. The more than two hectare complex of Monte Sant'Antonio is located on the Monte Sant'Antonio plateau in an area called Sa Cherchizza.
The area is home to a well sanctuary ( Italian Pozzo sacro ) with a paved area, a temple with a rectangular base, a corridor wall and parts of a presumably prenuraghic Cyclopean wall, all in a destroyed state. The Nuraghe Cherchizza is located on the western edge of the plateau. Despite the destruction, the sacred well still has the round chamber and opens onto a large paved area that is crossed by a water drain. Several elements of the fountain's white tuff ceiling were found nearby: they are blocks with a semicircular depression in the lower part and rectangular holes in the top, in which votive swords may have been placed. The entire structure of the well-temple is surrounded by a wall and towers. Not far away there is a round room with a stone hearth in the middle.
During excavations, amber objects and bronzes were found, including a statuette of a mother goddess.
In the years 1988-89 the complex was the subject of excavations by Fulvia Lo Schiavo and Anna Sanna after devastating vandalism.
Nearby is the Byzantine church of Santa Maria di Mesumundu. The Nuraghe Morette is nearby.
