The 40M Nimrod was an anti-aircraft tank used by the Hungarian Army during World War II .
history
The Hungarians adopted the design of the Swedish Landsverk L-62 Anti II anti-aircraft tank from 1940. It was based on the Landsverk L-60 , which was already being produced in Hungary as the Toldi tank . This model was considered appropriate because it could be used for both anti-aircraft and anti-tank missions. Since it proved to be ineffective against the Soviet T-34 tanks, it was subsequently only used against lightly armored vehicles and for air defense. The Hungarians improved the original L-62 design. The turret armor was strengthened and the turret enlarged to give the four-man crew more room to move. The tower was also changed so that the machine gun had a greater elevation range. He had an R-5 / a radio system. For the first 46 vehicles , called Nimrod I , the engines were supplied from the German Reich , for the last 89 vehicles, Nimrod II , the engines were produced under license in Hungary. The tank was equipped with a 40 mm automatic cannon, which was also a license replica from Bofors . This was located in a rotating tower that was open at the top. The first delivery took place in February 1942. From November 1941 to 1944 about 135 Nimrod tanks were produced. A pioneer and medical vehicle based on Nimrod was also built in small numbers. The Nimrod was used in the fighting in eastern Poland , Austria , Hungary, Transylvania and Czechoslovakia .
