- After the death of Hieron I , his brother Thrasybulus becomes the tyrant of Syracuse . However, because of his incompetence and cruelty, he is soon overthrown. Syracuse receives a democracy modeled on Athens .
- The Japygers defeat the Greek city of Taranto in southern Italy. According to Aristotle , so many aristocrats are killed that the democratic party can take power and change the form of government.
