50 West Street is a skyscraper under construction in New York City . After the construction work that began in mid-2008 had been suspended since the beginning of 2009, construction of the structure was resumed in October 2013. The high-rise was completed in autumn 2016.

description

50 West Street is located in Lower Manhattan , in the immediate vicinity of the new World Trade Center , where various high-rise buildings are currently being built (including the 541 meter high One World Trade Center ). The tower is to be 239 meters high, which would make it one of the tallest residential and hotel buildings in the city. It is planned to build a total of 301 residential units (floors 15 to 63) and 139 hotel rooms (floors 1 to 14). The hotel itself is to be run as a 5-star luxury hotel. Because of its location and height, the residents of the skyscraper will have a unique view of the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor . There are also plans to build a square that will connect West Street to Washington Street.

In mid-January 2013, it was announced that Time Equities was planning to ditch plans for the hotel and move retail and stores to the lower floors instead. The main reason for this is concerns of a renewed flooding of Lower Manhattan , where Hurricane Sandy caused great damage at the end of October 2012 . In addition, the mechanical equipment should be a few floors higher to be safe from the water. In order to ensure additional security, locks are to be built at the entrances to the tower.

On August 27, 2013 it was announced that the financing of the tower has been secured and that construction can therefore continue immediately.

The building was designed by the internationally renowned architect Helmut Jahn and, according to current plans, should aim for LEED gold certification. Construction work (for the foundation) began again at the end of October 2013, with the final height being reached at the beginning of October 2015. The building was officially completed at the end of October 2016.
