88FM was an Israeli radio station . It broadcast for about 22 years as part of the Kol Israel public broadcaster . The station ended its broadcasts on May 14, 2017 at midnight.

history

The station was founded in August 1995. Initially, jazz music and traffic information were broadcast under the name Kol Haderech . Business news came later and the name was changed to Kol Hakader for Business .

The program developed into an offer with a wide musical spectrum. It featured rock , pop , progressive rock , world music , electronic music , Latin American music , jazz , blues and punk, and new music from Israel. Once a week (Wednesday from 10 p.m.) a live session with an artist in the "Jam 88" series from the 88FM studios was broadcast.

In the course of its history, 88FM's programming went through a number of changes: programs were canceled or postponed. This led to protests by the listeners and the foundation of the Mishmar 88 listeners' initiative .

By resolution of the Knesset , all public service programs in Israel were shut down in 2017 . The broadcast of 88FM ended on May 14th. On May 15, 2017, the Kan 88 program went on air in its place as part of the newly established Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation .
