Aōdō Denzen ( Japanese 亜 欧 堂 田 善 , actual name: Nagata Zenkichi ( 永田 善 吉 ), other artist names: Aō Chinjin ( 亜 欧 陣 人 ), Jotan ( 如 旦 ), Seizandō ( 星 山 堂 ); born 1748 in Sukagawa , province Iwashiro (now: Fukushima Prefecture ); died June 25, 1822 ) was a Japanese western-style painter in the later Edo period .

life and work

Aōdō Denzen first studied painting with the monk and painter Gessen . His talent was recognized by the head of the Shirakwa domain in which he lived, Prince Matsudaira Sadanobu . He sent him to Edo , where he could continue his education with Tani Buncho , who was also promoted by Matsudaira. Then Aōdō was appointed the official painter ( 御用 絵 師 , Goyō eshi ) of this Matsudaira family .

From 1798 Aōdō lived in Edo and devoted himself entirely to studying painting in the Western style. He dealt with both oil painting and etching. He is said to have learned the art of etching from a Dutchman in Nagasaki and also from Shiba Kōkan . He developed his own technique by coating the copper plates with lacquer instead of wax, as Shiba Kōkan did. His set of etchings, which include vivid depictions of landscapes in and around Edo, as well as the people there, were popular and helped popularize Western imagery. He also worked on maps and illustrations for medical books.

Aōdō's best-known works include the screen entitled “New Image from Mount Asama ” ( 浅 間 山 図 屏風 , Asamayama to byōbu ) and the etching “View of the Kinryū-san” ( 金 竜 山 の 図 , Kinryūsan no zu ), with which the view of the Sensō-ji is meant.

Remarks

  1. Aō is a summary of A ( ) for Asia and Ō ( ) for Europe.
  2. Suidōbashi here in the front of the picture means the box-shaped "bridge for the water pipe", not the nearby road bridge over the outer ditch (外 堀, Sotobori).
