A-DNA
A DNA is one of the possible double helix - structures of DNA .
properties
A-DNA is a right-handed double-stranded DNA double helix, which is more compact than the B-form and whose nucleobases are not oriented orthogonally to the helix axis. A-DNA is the low humidity form of double-stranded DNA, e.g. B. with dried DNA or DNA crystals . Other DNA structures are e.g. B. B-DNA , Z-DNA , C-DNA , hairpin, triplex, cruciform, left-handed Z-form, tetraplex and A-motif . It is possible that the A-form is also formed in hybrid DNA- RNA double helices, since a similar structure is also the most common form of RNA-RNA double helices. The sugar units in A-DNA have a 3'-endo conformation , in contrast to B-DNA, which has a 2'-endo conformation of the sugar units. This also enables double-stranded RNA regions to adopt an A-DNA-like shape, since the steric hindrance caused by the 3'-endo conformation does not interfere with the formation of the A-shape, in contrast to the 2'-endo conformation of B shape. Due to its compact shape, A-DNA has a higher number of nucleobases per turn of the helix, a deeper large groove and a shallower small groove compared to B-DNA. A-DNA is about 30% shorter and wider than B-DNA.
