The AW Andernach GmbH & Co. KG was a global German manufacturer of roofing materials headquartered in Bonn , which in 2003 by the Canadian IKO Group was taken over and shut down of 2008.

history

August Wilhelm Andernach bought a tar factory from a pharmacist in Beuel am Rhein in 1888. He expanded this and founded the "Mittelrheinische Theerproducten- und Dachpappen-Fabriek AW Andernach", which later traded as "AW Andernach GmbH & Co. KG" and whose products became world-famous in the roofing materials industry. With 115 years of company history, the roofing material manufacturer is one of Bonn's traditional companies.

August Wilhelm Andernach developed the Kosmos roofing material , the brand name of which still exists. These patented folding boards were used to build dry wall surfaces and are still used today in a further developed form under the same name for roof construction. In particular, AWA's bitumen roof shingles became internationally known as “Bonn shingles ”. The last success of the AWA was the sealing foils for the ICE tunnels.

In the 1920s and during the Third Reich, the sons August Gerhard Andernach and Roland Edmund Andernach ran the company in the second generation, while August Wilhelm Andernach withdrew from the operative business. AWA GmbH & Co. KG was continued by his grandchildren Gerd Andernach and Werner Wolfgang Andernach into the third generation. Under the leadership of the two grandchildren, AWA developed from the 1950s to the end of the 1980s into the largest privately owned European plant for bitumen roofing materials. In 1988, shortly before Werner Wolfgang Andernach left, around 330 employees worked at the company's headquarters in Beuel. In its prime, in the 1980s, the company employed more than 300 people in Beuel alone, with a turnover of around 150 million DM. The family business even survived several major fires, some of which had completely destroyed the production facilities. As a family company, AWA was the main employer in Beuel am Rhein for many years . It was also one of the first companies in the Rhineland to employ Spanish guest workers, who are still based in Beuel am Rhein in the second and third generation. For more than 100 years, the AWA had a decisive influence on the development of the municipality of Beuel, today's Bonn district of Beuel.

At the end of the 1980s, differences over the strategic direction and an emerging company succession by Michael Andernach, Werner Andernach's eldest son, led to serious conflicts between the founder's two grandchildren. As a result, Werner Andernach sold his company shares to his brother. Gerd Andernach now saw himself forced to take on more outside capital and to involve investors in the company.

After Gerd Andernach's death in 1994, who was the last managing director of the family, the company's turnover increased by around 100 million euros until 2000. Meanwhile, the number of employees in Bonn-Beuel fell to 230 in 1996, while the commitment abroad, especially at the subsidiaries in Poland, increased with up to 350 employees.

In 2003 the company filed for bankruptcy as a result of the construction crisis and difficulties experienced by its foreign subsidiaries, particularly in Poland. The Canadian company IKO took over the company from the bankruptcy estate and closed the factory gates in Beuel on December 31, 2008. In 2011, new investors were sought for the former company premises in the Beuel-Ost industrial area in Bonn.
