Motorola A780
The Motorola A780 is a folding mobile phone produced by Motorola . The Linux- based smartphone is available in an Asian version and, since August 2005, a European version (also called A780 + ). The European version differs from the Asian version in the absence of speech recognition and the presence of an integrated navigation system . The A780 has a touchscreen with a resolution of 240 × 320 pixels . When closed, this is partially visible through a window in the flap. Using the numeric keypad on the flip under the window, the basic functions of the phone can be called up even when the flip is closed.
Compared to other smartphones, the A780 stands out due to its small size of 107 × 54 × 24 mm, a low price and high system stability. It was criticized because of the immature PIM functionality, the limited range of additional software and the battery life (this is two to four days depending on use and display settings; GPRS must be activated when using certain SIM cards from the network operator O₂ , otherwise it will decrease the battery life drastically). On the other hand, it is valued by customers for its Mobilinux operating system and the possibilities it offers.
The A780 has an integrated GPS receiver which , together with the CoPilot software from ALK Technologies, enables navigation via satellite positioning. The function of the navigation system is initially limited to one of nine selectable European regions, but can be extended to all of Europe through a chargeable activation. An update of the map material or the associated PC software that would allow map material to be imported into the mobile phone was not produced by the manufacturer ALK Technologies. A780 owners are therefore not able to purchase current map material.
