Primer (school book)

A primer is a mostly illustrated beginner reading book , especially for children to learn to read. The term ABC book is also common .

The forerunner of the primers and reading books used today in the Middle Ages was called Abecedarium , after the first letters of the Latin alphabet a, b, c, d. It was actually an alphabetically ordered textbook .

Even today, for learning to read similar books or poster used the words but not after the first letter, but rather after initial vowel differentiated ( initial sound ) and also contain entries for diphthongs and other letter groups.

The primer has established itself internationally as the first reading book in school lessons. Brooches have been around in almost every country on earth since the second half of the 20th century.

Word development

The Duden explains the etymology as "distorted from the ' Bible ' (from which many readings originated)".

In general usage, the term is fibula today also synonymous with a more or less comprehensive nonfiction , guide book , reference book , manual , textbook , textbook or even lexicon . Here are often composites formed such as horticulture fibula that refer to the specific content.

The primer in the GDR

The children in the GDR learned to read at school using the primer. The title of the book was “Our Primer”. The primer was published by Volk und Wissen Verlag and cost 3 marks. The number of pages was approx. 112 pages.

Others

Some fonts offer a variation - in particular, the letter "a" - for use in a school primer, for example, the variant of OpenDyslexicAlta for dyslexic developed man font OpenDyslexic .

School handwriting is also called primer writing.
